When should a patient be advised of the existence of computerized databases containing medical information?

If converting records from paper to computerized, when/if should the patient be notified.

  1. I'm not sure I understand your question. There have been computerized data bases containing medical information for many years, and it would seem like most consumers would be aware of this. Many hospitals have moved from paper charts to electronic medical records. Insurance companies & doctors' offices also have electronic medical data. Without some more detail on your part, it is kind of hard to figure out what you are going for. I can't quite imagine saying to a patient "Hi, may name is Jane, I'll be your nurse today, & by the way, we switched from paper charts to an electronic medical record a few years back." I still don't understand... why would the patient need to be notified that the medical record would be electronic rather than paper? It is pretty much the way health care is going. There are many safeguards built into an EMR & over time it will become industry standard.
