Where can I find an Acoustic Management app for WD 120Gb HDD - not based on Intel Application Accelerator plz?
IntelĀ® Application Accelerator doesn' t work on my old 440BX/ZX chipset. I need a software only to change Acoustic Management on my hard drive, if this is possible - some software who can set this directly in the hard drive chipset, regardless of the IDE controller or mainboard chipset. The HDD is Western Digital model JB120.

- As far as I know,,,No actual "official" app exists for those drives. Ridiculous situation ,that a Manufacture won't support a existing FEATURE & capability of it's products,,, a feature which is being increasingly important/Desireable with the growing Apps of Media Center PC's,,,,isn't it? I'd be ruthlesslessly Promoting it as a SELLING FEATURE vs my competition. .......................................... You can TRY this,,,or a better suggestion would be to further investigate it. Though I doubt you can get into trouble Trying. Also,,I have No Idea if it will support that Chipset (Odd that Intel's doesn't) Both Samsung and Hitachi stuff is supposed to work with WD. I've never used either,,so I'm just spreading rumours,,lol:) The interface screen of those is supposed reveal current A.M. state,,and be switchable. Here's the links to the downloads ...................... Samsung - "HUTIL" utility http://product.samsung.com/cgi-bin/nabc/tech_info/hdd/b2c_hdd_hutil.jsp?eUser= ....................... Hitachi- "Feature Tool (v2.03) " utility http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/download.htm#Optimize ................... Here is a link to an "old" well-proven Registry Cleaner utility. Reason I'm including it,is because it has a Software REMOVAL function which does a very good job. Simple One-Click function. It works very similar to Windows' "ADD/REMOVE Programs " Uninstaller thing. As you may know,,,Not everything you download appears in Windows ADD/REMOVE to be able to remove. You can use this "Uninstaller",,,download & Use,,,even AFTER The Fact,,, Just in case the Samsung/Hitachi AM apps dont have an "uninstaller" and You want to remove them --when the program Opens,,the menu bar has a tab ,sez "UNINSTALL MENU" Very easy ,simple program (aside from all else,,the TOOLS selection has 'registry cleanup">do them all function,,it works very good & safe. Not the lastest, greatest Reg Cleaner out there,,but pretty good REGCLEANER RegCleaner 4.3.0.780 ( By Jouni Vuorio ) http://www.majorgeeks.com/RegCleaner_d460.html If that link doesn't work,,Try from their homepage,,and search the REGISTRY list from L/H side menu Just a Suggestion ,,if You have trouble UNINSTALLING ............................................. If You cannot find a suitable Acoustic Mgmnt prog,,, And the NOISE is what You're trying to minimize.... The Possible Options to try to quiet it down some.. can get quite a bit more drastic than just a download. Just a mention of few,,for what its worth. None are very appealing,I know. Most require either Creativity or $$$. *Certain HDDs are rated as being Much Quieter than others. That's Very Subjective,,especially to the ear. I'd bet that if an Average drive,,such as W-D's is objectionable,,then most others would probably be also. There IS some differences,,,but not really MUCH difference to most ears. * Some noise can be reduced by Isolating the HDD from the Case...the Case tends to resonate and amplify noises. --Suspending the HDD via springs or heavy rubber bands or large diameter/narrow gauge "O"Rings can help. String or Cable-Ties seem to sometimes produce a "guitar string" effect sometimes,,,,what ya want a "dead medium" to suspend from ---Easiest suspension is Blocks or Strips of thick "Foam Rubber" A FullSize PAD tends to cover/block the heat-radiant surface. A couple of Strips can act sorta like "table legs" and isolate the drive while raising it to allow full airflow. It can sit on BOTTOM of Case,,out of drive cage/rack. IOr,it can sit on the foam IN many drive cages--prob there is if it Touches anwhere you're back to noise transmission to the case. DOWNSIDE,,is that the Drive is NOT actually Mounted solidly to anything....Not a Prob unless You move /Tilt,etc the PC One In-Drive Cage method is to put a Pad of Foam on bottom of Cage,,Turn the Drive on it's SIDE Edge , then "pack it" on each side with more foam to center it in the cage. Use small-but Thick side blocks to leave Drive unshrouded by the Foam & get good airflow Side View of Drive> {__X_____X__}...where the X's are the foam blocks. Front view... cage wall> ] x {hdd} x [ <cage wall,,the X's are the foam pads,,centering the "Sideways Mounted" drive. *Perhaps QUIETEST is to Encase the drive. Ventilation must be provided. TACKY but easy way,,Make a ROLL of foam and tape it together. Length,,as long as practical to fit in you case. Diameter,,,a bit LESS than the Drive,,so that when you slide the drive into it it sorta Stretches the Foam Tube into an Oval. That will support the drive,,and allow full airflow around it. If Heat is a concern ,,use a 3" or 4" Low Speed Quiet Fan,12V and run it on 5V. (RED wire =+5v YELLOW=+12v on a PC powersupply/hdd plug) Just Jam it into end of Tube,,the farther In,,the Quieter. You can even then block the other end of tube--Use a square or rectangle block of foam jammed into end of tube,,so it will have an Air Intake hole for the fan All the above sure is a LOTTA 'noise" to reply to someone who asked about "quiet",,huh?? Good Luck with it,,hope any of that helps! **Someday I GOTTA Try Samsung,Hitachi, and everybody else's A.M. ware to see how/IF any of them support various other drives. Maybe someday when Western-Digital gets finished counting all their Customers' MONEY,,,they'll have time to offer us their own Official Utility to Fully use the capabilities we PAY FOR built into the drive.
